The Body in the Library (Sherlock Holmes x reader)

Summary: when you fid a body in the library there's only one person you know to call. Such a shame that the two of you cannot get on.

Author's note: well, why not? A returning hyperfixation is still a hyperfixation.

It was when the mobile rang for the fifth time that John finally lost it. He slammed down his paper and marched over to Sherlock’s mobile. On the first ring, Sherlock had glanced at it and practically threw it across the room. It was only by chance that it happened to land on the spare chair and Sherlock had abruptly left soon after. That hadn’t stopped the mystery caller though.

“Hell-“

“Holmes,” a voice barked down the line, “why the fuck did it take you so long to answer your phone. There’s a body in my flat and I’d thought you’d like to see it before I call the police.”

“Err… a body.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Then the person said.

“Who are you?”

“I think I should be asking you that.”

“You picked up a phone that doesn’t belong to you. Did you steal it?”

“Of course not!”

It was at this moment that the front door slammed shut and John heard familiar footsteps running up the stairs. He was going to hang up but the person on the other end of line was describing a very brutal murder and he found himself unable to. When Sherlock flung open the door the two of them stared awkwardly at each other.

“Hello?” the person said again, “are you still there? I mean, there is a dead body in my flat and it’s hard to get blood out of hardwood floors. Well, at least from what I understand.”

“So,” you glanced over at John, “How do you know Sherlock.”

You grinned at him as you filled up the kettle and put it on the boil. You hopped onto your countertop and said,

“Cuppa?”

“You also seemed to be very calm about this.”

You paused for a moment before saying slowly,

“Where is Holmes?”

“Still in your living room.”

“Then he can’t hear us,” you said, “the truth is I’m freaking the fuck out about this. I mean, there’s a body in my flat. How often does that happen?”

“You’ll be surprised.”

“I’m just keeping up appearances in front of Sheer Luck. You know him. You can imagine how insufferably smug he’d be to see me that unsettled.”

John’s lips twitched at the nickname. He folded his arms and you swung your legs back and forth as the two of you waited in agonising silence for the kettle to boil. Eventually you shattered it by saying,

“So, was it Afghanistan or Iraq?”

John looked up at you sharply and you couldn’t help but laugh. You hopped off the counter and put some tea in the strainer and continued,

“Don’t worry, I already know. I not like them.”

“How you know?” John asked, exasperated

The kettle boiled and you poured the water into the two waiting mugs.

“If I was pretentious I would say that it’s the way you stand,” you said, “how you remained standing despite me offering you a seat. Your clothes, old but good quality. Clearly you value practicality over style. Blah, blah, blah. However, I am not like that. You want to know the truth?”

“Yes!”

“I googled you.”

You handed John his mug and at that moment Sherlock burst into your kitchen. You rolled your eyes at him and he took John’s mug from him.

“That’s not for you.” You snapped

Sherlock ignored you and took a sip. You clicked your tongue and handed John your mug. He tried to offer it back but you shook your head.

“So, what do you think of my little problem.” You asked

“Is that what you call it.” Said John

You shrugged and turned your attention back to Sherlock. He remain silent, taking a sip of tea, before saying,

“It’s… curious.”

“High praise,” you said with a smile, “I’m glad you said that. Although it shouldn’t be too hard to solve.”

You grinned at John’s shocked reaction and Sherlock’s raised eyebrow. You turned your back on them as you filled your own mug with water.

“Although if I didn’t know who already done it, it would be a lot harder to solve.” You said

It was at that moment that you heard banging on your front door.

“And that would be the police.”

Sherlock gave you an affronted look and said,

“You called them? Then what was the point of wasting my time with this.”

“I gave you the heads up,” you said with a shrug, “not my fault you chose to ignore my calls. Maybe you could answer the door? I’m sure Anderson will be there and I’m also sure that he’ll be so pleased to see you.”

At your smug look Sherlock turned on his heel and marched towards your front door. Whether it was to get away from you or to rub it in the faces of Scotland Yard that he was here first, you didn’t know. Still, now he was out of your space you could finally relax.

“You two really don’t get on.” Said John

“Does he get on with anyone?”

“I do.”

“You seem to be the exception.”

“And what did you mean, you already knew who did it.”

“Ah that,” you laughed and sat down, “well you see John, I recognise this murder.”

“You… recognise it?”

“Yeah.”

You leant across your table and shifted some books. When you found the one you were looking for you tossed it over to him.

“I’m an author,” you said, “mystery which is part of the reason why we don’t get on.”

“Death is on the Cards,” said John, “yeah, I’ve heard of this.”

“Body found in the library of a mystery author’s home,” you said, “head smashed in with a candlestick. If I’ve seen the similarities then so has Holmes.”

“Still doesn’t explain how you know who did it.”

“Oh that’s easy. The person who committed the murder was the detective who inspected the crime scene.”

The Great Thing About HNKNA Being An Otome Game

I had an epiphany a few months ago. I’ve talked before about how many pitfalls HNKNA experiences by nature of it being a dating simulator, and how a lot of the cooler parts of the story and lore are overshadowed by the core romance mechanic and how I’m not a big fan of it, blah blah. But I’ve also seen way too many modern Alice in Wonderland adaptations as a result of my ridiculously long-term Kuni no Alice hyperfixation, and allow me to say that there is one thing that it nails that nothing else can even come close to touching— Alice herself!

The Kuni no Alice series brings about what I think is the best modern interpretation of Alice I’ve yet to see in any media I’ve consumed. She’s quick-witted and brings the attitude, but she cares. Her reactions are realistically absurd and there are few moments throughout everything where she feels out of character or unrelatable. And I think the otome genre is crucial to why that is.

By nature, dating simulators don’t have strong protagonists. They’re supposed to be a blank canvas for the player to project onto to achieve their goals. Am I calling Alice flat? No, quite the opposite. Her story is set in a Victorian-inspired fantasy land with lots of guns and danger and a strict social structure, but it’s intended for a modern audience, and when connection with your protagonist is the key to connection with your story, a modern audience means a modern Alice.

The modern Alice is one of the hardest characters to write.

In most instances of an adapted, cool, edgy Alice in Wonderland, the most insufferable character on screen is, in fact, Alice. This is true of the Disney films, SyFy’s Alice special, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, etc. More often than not, Alice Kingsleigh, Hamilton, whatever you want to call her, is a young adult frustrated by life in an oppressive society who will only accept her if she acts in a hyper-specific way, usually at the risk of being institutionalized should she fail to comply. She argues with her parents, who want her to get married, and all of this turns her into a spiteful girl who is always on the defensive.

It’s insufferable to watch.

The character of Alice is too often portrayed as relentlessly mean, but under the guise of empowerment. The audience is tired of weak-willed women, so the director hunches Alice’s dress up passed her ankles and gives her a sword, an attitude, and an ugly man to kiss without her parents’ involvement. Biologically engineered to shatter every well-known gender role established in Victorian England and basically nothing else, movies and TV deliver their “strong female protagonists” in the form of a curt, unchangingly rude version of Alice whose words and actions are supposed to be justified by her circumstances. And god, does it fucking suck!

You can't connect to this Alice, this armed and ready, sharp-tongued, "curiouser and curiouser" Alice who lives in a world that practically clears a narratively untouchable path to every foot she plans to step on. Personally, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The misunderstood to confused, to disgruntled, to aggressive pipeline is overplayed to the point where the Alice of any and all modern interpretations has become, essentially, the same character, forced to loop the same 6 emotional plot points from now into eternity, no matter how many coats of science fiction you put over it.

(Yes, there is a part of me that understands this comes from the fact that Alice is most often written by money-hungry, corporate studios, led primarily by men, who do not understand feminine audiences, or how they want to see themselves represented in media. I get that. And Alice Liddell is not safe from that. But consider: she's my babygirl.)

Am I saying the character of Alice can't be mean, can't say fuck, can't have a sword? Of course not!!!! Give women swords!!! But I am saying that every time a director phones it in with that "Oh, I know that book" budget and gives a British blondie trust issues, a prophecy, and a quirked up, top hat-wearing sidekick to have unfulfilling sexual tension with, i lose my wings AND my marbles.

Enter: our Alice Liddell.

What do we have with her, really? Well, the protagonist of a mid-shelf otome game, which has sequels out the wazoo, a movie and 2 stage play runs, but still somehow only enough translated media to fill a single Barnes and Noble shopping basket about halfway. Thanks QuinRose.

But for real.

Alice Liddell is written, from the ground up, as an otome protagonist. As such, there are narrative must-haves that she can't shake. She needs to be relatable to the modern young adult, even if she's supposed to reflect the Victorian female experience. This would usually be the Achilles Heel of an adapted protagonist: you, the player, get to watch in horror as your favorite whimsical Main Girl is watered down into a bowl of nothing soup for the sake of projection and selling more copies of a game with eye candy catboys and toxicity glorification.

HOWEVER,

This necessary mundanity that is baked into Alice's character, inseparable from her very being as the taste of weed in a brownie, is what singlehandedly saves this adaptation and makes her objectively the best. Unlike in a lot of cinematic adaptations, she's not meant to be the (failed) vehicle of a "deeper narrative" about the strength and roles of women in society. She doesn't exist for any higher purpose, she isn't the chosen one who will declare "Damn The Man" and force the world to listen.

Alice is a girl doing everything she can. She's experienced profound loss. She's self-deprecating. Snarky. She's been through break ups, gotten even with bullies, cuddled with her cat on a Sunday, everything that doesn't matter. The crux of her character is that she's been burned by life and love, yet she can't truly give up on them. Hers is a story of healing, of adaptation and getting back up when life kicks the shit out of you. No matter how sharply she speaks, Kuni no Alice's Alice almost always acts from a place of concern and love for others. She crucially never wields a weapon, reacting to the violence of Wonderland with that extremely jaded "holy fucking shit, what the fuck?" energy that I think any of us would bring to the table, given the circumstances. She's not her community's """lunatic,""" she's not sailing the high seas sideways, she's not on drugs, or destiny's favorite, or anything like that. She's new in town! She's sick of these people! She just wants to go home and read!

She's you. She's me. She's a clusterfuck of a damaged girl, trying to sort out what matters, find her passion and move forward without letting her past stray too far from memory. She's someone whose self-importance and perception by others is foreign to her. She wants to matter, wants not to be left alone by the people she loves, but god forbid she ever admit it.

QuinRose gives us Alice Liddell, suffering failgirl, not Alice Liddell, conceptual landmark, and that was the best possible route anyone could have taken with this character. Alice is the main character, but she is not a hero, and that's a fucking genius move.

Call me a narc, but I generally feel as if the Twitter Takeovers have gotten increasingly more unfunny the more we got? I haven't even watched the last one, but it's the fact that the fandom takes everything they like and runs with it as if it's canon that bothers me... because "everything they like" ranges from dumb quips (Sonic liking Mongolian throat singing or hating Amy's shortcake despite neither having been shown in the games before ever, for example) to statements immediately seen as shipping (hi, Sonadow), to blatant mischaracterizations (I know we got the one ShTH advertisement with Shadow dancing but do you truly think he's gonna be singing and dancing at a concert?), to IDW being canon (Starline mention...), and everything inbetween. And now Amy's cards suddenly being her "hyperfixation", even though there's a million posts on Tumblr alone why a hyperfixation is not just a quirky synonym to "being deeply invested in a hobby". I don't know, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Of course they're just meant to be funny (unfortunately not forgotten in the grand scheme of things, because TMOSTH mentioned Shadow and his coffee bean thing, alas), but it feels as if the creators of the sketches think they are funny by mangling the characters and coming up only with the stupidest out-of-this-world nonsense that the fandom runs with it because it is stupid and out-of-this-world, you know? I want to like them, but... not like this, so to say. Not when the characters are not getting actual respect and the fandom becomes insufferable through it on top, if I may be blunt.

Real talk: Eggman gushing about Sage, literally saying that she is the reason he keeps existing, plus fans "booing" Sonic for laughing at such sappiness, makes me want to drink concrete.

That he's only proud of her because she's such a big accomplishment and a testament of his genius? That Frontiers showing Eggman getting choked up at the thought of losing her, calling her "dear daughter" in a somber tone, and the DLC's new ending showing them holding hands, didn't mean that Eggman in that game had been warped to develop genuine fondness for Sage, and it was actually all as self-centered as Eggman should be? :^)

(also I don't get why he would love the Egg Salamander, of all things. Didn't he build it together with Nega? As much as I like Rush, it feels like a shoehorned reference for the sake of being semi-obscure.)

And even if, even if I accept that this is completely non-canon and for the sake of a joke... other fans won't. Because "everything is canon". Shadow canonically likes to eat raw beans. Amy is canonically neurodivergent (or she canonically misuses medical terms). Sonic canonically has nightmares about not being appreciated, which might I add was a scene deadass stole from Boom, the show that had no pretenses of being canon whatsoever. Eggman canonically adores Sage as his own darling daughter. Starline canonically exists in the gameverse. I canonically am done with this.

Honestly, from what little I've seen, this Takeover was so OOC and just unfunny that the concept has completely lost his charm. What's the appeal of asking question to the game cast, if the game cast simply doesn't behave like they would and they are twisted for the sake of memes and "how do you do fellow kids"?

oh and the shiptease is out of control. at one point amy talks about going at a concert with shadow which makes sonic jealous, in that "NO EVERYTHING IS FINE" way. this is literally 2000s-tier shadamy and the reason i to this day am sour about that ship. save me, save me, save me, can't face this life alone.

You and Bokuto are certainly the odd couple at first glance. Where you’re introverted, Bokuto is bouncing around and being an extrovert in every sense of the word.

He absolutely loves listening to you ramble. It’s one of the only times he’ll be quiet himself since it’s such a change from what you’re usually like.

Okay, since you’re easily annoyed, Dazai might seem like a strange matchup since he’s likely the source of most of your annoyance. But I really do think you’d get along well.

He’s always keeping an eye out for gemstones and sea shells to give you. He knows you like collecting them and likes being able to add to your collection.

Dazai would love going to conventions with you! He thinks they’re great fun and they take his mind off his suicidal tendencies for a while.

LMFAOO i completely get that!! in my case though, to be honest i’m just as not normal about my interests in person as i am online. at least with close friends. i literally make collages based on my favorite fanfics at our group scrapbook nights. i convince them to watch life series episodes with me. 3/5 irls following me here are outright in the fandom now because of me, and one is like basically there and actively listens to me yap about my favorite fic whenever it gets a new chapter update!

it’s not all my irls, i kind of have like a mental criteria for who does/doesn’t get my tumblr specifically, but really once i’m close with someone, i’m no less insufferable about my mcyt hyperfixation irl than i am online. especially once they get into the fandom themself, i have very little reason not to let them read my fics/see my posts about it! they’re basically people i’d be like online friends with anyways!
